Please be aware of scams targeting owners of lost pets. Wexford County Animal Shelter is operated by the Sheriff's Department. Please read the note shared by one of our shelter partners describing the incident this weekend.
"Missing kitty in Cadillac. Was posted on local lost/found pet pages, as well as For the Love of Louie and Pawboost.
"Dave Silvers" called owner around 9pm on 3/29 on a private number claiming to be the director of shelter operations for the Wexford County Animal Shelter.
Said the cat had a dislocated shoulder and needed urgent surgery due to risks with blood vessel/nerve blockage to the leg. Asked the owner for $3404 for the procedure but needed half of the money down to begin.
Would only accept payment via PayPal, cashapp, Venmo, or Zelle.
Claimed a doctor Suzanne Sawyer, an on call vet, would be performing the surgery.
When asked what clinic the vet practiced out of, the caller got upset and stated "suck my ****" clinic and disconnected the call. This was after an hour on the phone trying to get information.
Caller did not provide pictures of the cat but confirmed correct details of the cats markings/collar, all of which were in the "missing" posts."
